Arne Deforce knows Xenakis’s world like no other: raw, radical and physical to the very core. In this solo recital, he delves straight into the heart of two masterpieces from twentieth-century cello literature. In ‘Kottos’, Xenakis subjects the cello to mythological convulsions: snarling glissandi, explosive gestures and an intensity that at times is more reminiscent of percussion than a string instrument. The monumental ‘Nomos alpha’ goes even further. The cello is dissected into a system of pure energy, built from mathematical structures that unfold as a delirium of fiery bowing and brutal precision. Deforce, who has studied this repertoire for years, places you right at the heart of Xenakis’s micro-universe: a place where his instrument crashes, groans and glows.
